OVERVIEW

Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge is situated in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind. The routes wind through and over the hills and valleys surrounding Lake Heritage. Share the trails with over 300 head of game, including Impala, Springbok, Wildebeest, Blesbok and more!

On your bike

Blue Route:

The trail includes Single track, Jeep track and Bermed corners. The route has easy ''escape routes'' back to the lodge. This trail is perfect for beginner riders to hone their skills and perfect bike control.

Yellow Route:

Extra river frontage, multiple forests and rocky sections await the riders. The route features a lot of singletrack and will take longer than an average route to complete as there are long climbs and technical decents. The route winds away from the lake in the direction of Beyers Naude Drive before heading back down to the new "Spookhuis" section. A long climb awaits you before making your way back to the lodge.

Red Route:

The red route is our most technical route and is only for advanced riders. Riders cross the bridge at the Lake Heritage dam wall and is immediately greeted by a sharp climb up a concrete jeep track. The route features technical climbs, decents, switchbacks and tight forest sections. PLEASE NOTE: Advanced riders only. No one will be allowed to cut or veer off track. Any persons caught doing this will be asked to leave the Red route immediately.

Off the bike

Other activities at the lodge include: trail running, swimming, paddling, canoeing, scuba diving, hot air ballooning, game drives, boat cruises, guided walks, and fly fishing.

Cradle Gateway-to-Gateway MTB Trail

CLOSEST TOWN > Krugersdorp

TRAIL DESTINATION > Cradle of Humankind World Heritge Site

DISTANCE > 17km-30km

GRADING >  Easy to Moderate

OVERVIEW

The Cradle of Humankind has a number of MTB trails scattered throughout its rural landscape, but can now at last boast its own designated route. This is the unique Cradle Gateway-to-Gateway MTB Trail, situated within the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. It is also set within the ‘road reserve’ of a number of provincial tourism roads, with amazing access to a combination of natural landscapes and cultural sites.

On your bike

The trail, designed to provide an enjoyable recreational ride along open, flowing tracks with gentle elevation changes, was initiated in 2013. Phase 1 consists of 17km of purpose-built single-track, and starts at the Gateway located approximately 300m due South of the Kloofzicht Lodge entrance (information, rules and general guidance is provided here). It then follows a one-way route towards the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve to the next major Gateway en route to Lanseria Airport.

Cross the road at the circle to dip along a gentle 3,6km downhill until you reach a cycle bridge over the Bloubank River. A section of paved trail will take riders along a landscaped edge, before changing character as it dips down a constructed retaining wall to a wooded section among large oak trees all the way to a historic rest spot just before crossing said River.

The trail now ascends towards the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve section, where riders are likely to spot the occasional tiger and giraffe (also watch out for tourists and vehicles along this section)! Continue onto 2km of gently rolling track and excellent grasslands views as you meander towards the Teak Place entrance; make sure to cross over to the other side of the road by using an existing culvert. A further 4km will see you cross the road for the last time at a raised traffic platform.

The next 2km leads gently down an embankment and then up a short steep section towards the highest point of the trail. The views here are stunning, so stop and take in the sights. A final 4km of trail leads past the entrance to the Cradle Restaurant, and then winds through open countryside with uninterrupted views all the way to the link with the next Gateway.

For now, you’ll have to use the existing cycling lanes (Yellow painted lanes) to return to the entrance Gateway at Kloofzicht Lodge, as the trail system is one-way only. Once the entire trail loop is completed, the return journey to the Start Gateway may be undertaken by following the single-track along the D101. Although the trail is designed as a "Green Trail", provision has been made for passing zones with a few, well marked, more technical "Blue Trail" sections.

Off the bike

Attractions nearby include the Visitors’ Centre at Maropeng, the Sterkfontein Caves, the Rhino and Lion Park and numerous hospitality venues in the area that support cycling activities and riders.
