OVERVIEW

A stark though awe-inspiring landscape inhabited by lizards, ancient tortoises, busy toktokkies, inquisitive meerkat and regal gemsbok nestles in a basin between the Cederberg mountain range and the Roggeveld.

There are as yet no official cycling trails, but you are free to explore the area around your accommodation to your heart’s content.

HOW TO GET THERE

From Ceres head north on the R46 for 40km and then take the R355 towards Calvinia. After approximately 0km, turn right on the P2250 towards Middelpos and continue for a further 75km to reach the Park Offices at Roodewerf.

Plato Lodge offers that perfect combination of peace and quite as well as being an adrenaline junky’s paradise.

They offer 3 MTB trails as well as sand boarding, river rating and hiking! Their 6km, 24km and 30km trails traverse typical Richtersveld scenery following jeep tracks and some single-single track sections and on the 24 and 30km trails you will even spot game such as springbok, kudu and gemsbok.

HOW TO GET THERE

From Kakamas or Cape Town take the N14 then turn off on the R359 and go straight till the road becomes gravel. After a further 40km on the gravel road, turn off at the Plato Lodge sign.

OVERVIEW

Say goodbye to the thundering falls and saddle up for a ride at the Kalahari River & Safari Co, situated just 23km outside Kakamas along the Namibia / Riemvasmaak dirt road. Nestling along the meandering course of the Gariep (or Orange River, if you will), this adventure destination is one of those places you always find very difficult to leave.

On your bike

The extensive property is not primarily a mountain biking destination, but its location makes it perfect for all levels of riders keen to test their two-wheel skills. If you want to go play-biking, the 7km of gravel roads and quad bike tracks crisscrossing the rugged kopjes along the banks of the Gariep offers an amusing diversion for an hour or two.

If however you’re keen to trip into Bear Grylls territory, then saddle up and set course north-west towards Riemvasmaak. A undulating gravel ride (with a short tarmac interlude) totals 37km to the hot springs, where a welcome dip will be sure to restore your spirits. From here, you can circle back to the Kalahari River & Safari Co via the Augrabies Falls National Park. All in all, you are looking at in excess of a hundred kilometres on your bike, so go

HOW TO GET THERE

Follow the N144 from Kakamas towards Upington; once you have crossed the Gariep, immediately turn left on the Nabia/Riemvasmaak Road and follow the Kalahari River & Safari Co signs, first right, and then left. After 23km the entrance gate to the River Camp will be on your left.

BEST TIME OF YEAR

Good cycling year round but summer heat is intense. Best to cycle early morning or late afternoon.

 

 

Klein Pella Guest Farm

OVERVIEW

If you’re heading south from Upington on the N7, Klein Pella is well worth a stop. You’re still on the banks of the Gariep as it snakes its way through this desert land en route to the Atlantic Ocean, so do not miss out on this gorgeous destination. 

On your bike

This 18,000ha working farm is situated west of the famous Pella Town cathedral, and boasts the biggest date plantation in the southern hemisphere. Sunsets, sunrises, stone outcrops, incredible stars, a small quiver tree forest, azure skies and crisp air will all conspire to make you saddle up in a harsh but beautiful environment.

You can ride along the many access and gravel district or farm roads, with breathtaking scenery sure to blow your mind. A favourite ride heads from Klein Pella back towards the main road; look out for the 4x4 route towards Pella Town to explore this historic village. Otherwise, trip through the date plantations and green vineyards and onto the banks of the Orange River.

Great destination for fishing, canoeing, river rafting, hiking, abseiling, rock climbing and picnics along the river bank.

HOW TO GET THERE

Follow the N14 south from Upington to Springbok. Turn right 24km after Pofadder onto a tar road to Pella for 300m before turning left onto a gravel road for 21km. Turn right at the blue and white Karsten Farm sign; follow this road for about 8km to the Klein Pella Guest House.

Swartbooisberg MTB Route

GRADING > Difficult - Technical uphill part

OVERVIEW

This route offers some spectacular views over the Orange River and has a very technical uphill climb for the more keen mtber. Guided rides are also offered by Gerhard Oberholster from Xtreme Green.

On your bike

The route starts at Vergelen Guesthouse and than continues along old watertonnels to the foot of the Swartbooisberg mountain. From here the route takes a very steep 3km uphill with some lekker technical sections inluding loose rocks and a gradient change of 22% in the last 50m to the top. When the top of the mountain has been reached, enjoy the view over the wineyards and follow the same route back to Vergelegen. 

Off the bike

Visit the majestic Augrabies Falls less then 20km away and explore the beauty of mother nature on foot by doing a hiking trail in the Augrabies Nature Reserve.

HOW TO GET THERE

Vergelegen is approximately 4 km from Kakamas on the main route (N14) between Upington and Kakamas.

BEST TIME OF YEAR

You’re basically headed into semi­ desert, so expect summer days to cook, especially between November and March. Plan your rides so that you leave camp at dawn and get back by 11:00. Autumn to early spring makes for a more amiable outdoor experi­ence, although the nights and early mornings will freeze your butt off.
