Karkloof Trails, KZN

World-class … that’s all I need to say about Karkloof. As an Average Joe who’s been fortunate enough to ride trails all around the world, I can safely say that few rides can compare whoop-for-whoop with this magical little piece of the Midlands Meander. But there’s no need to take my word for it, so saddle up and plug into pure MTB Mojo.

Swellendam Trails, Overberg

Here's the deal: the Swellendam Trails (all hand-crafted on space belonging to the local Municipality) is open and FREE. Yup, you heard correctly, and I guarantee you there is nowhere else in the Western Cape where you will have open public access to trails of this quality.

All Out Adventures – Sungubala Eco Camp, KZN

All Out Adventures and the gorgeous Sungubala Eco Camp must surely rate as one of the Berg’s best kept secrets. Situated a mere 2km off The Cavern tarmac road makes it easy to access, but you will feel a million miles away from the rat race.

Utshwayelo Lodge, Kosi Bay Mouth Reserve, KZN

From Durban, take the N2 north past Empangeni and turn right to Hluhluwe/Sodwana Bay, continuing on the R22 to Mbazwana. Keep going for 45km to a traffic circle, where you turn right to KaNgwanase/Kosibay and the Farazella Border Post. Drive 20km past Emanguzi (KanGwanase) towards the Mozambique border post, only turning right onto a good gravel road 600m before border post. Another 4.5 km will get you to the Utshwayelo Lodge and Camp.

Baviaans River Conservancy – The ‘Bedford’ Baviaans

Hang on folks, we’re talking about the ‘river’ and not the ‘kloof’. Yup, there’s a whole other Baviaans to explore, but it is way away in this province.

St Francis, Kouga Region, Eastern Cape

The coastal stretch west of ‘the world’s perfect wave’ in Jeffreys Bay rates as one of SA’s undiscovered mountain biking gems. There’s no huge trail network, but you’ll get to super-charge your soul along a range of sumptuous coastal rides.

Tulbagh Bone Trail

Mountain biking can be a pretty cruel sport and chances are you will seriously suffer if you tackle the Tulbagh Bone Trail a tad undercooked. Yup, this is a tough old bugger of a crank into those high-and-righteous Witzenberg ridges …

JBay Bike Park & Zebra Lodge MTB Trails, Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape ticks a whole bunch of kick-ass adventure boxes, and a whole lot of them happen to be right here on the Sunshine Coast. The weather is as friendly as the locals, so rock up any time of year, as the region is rated one of Africa’s most temperate climates.

Retreat Guest Farm MTB Trail, Western Cape

Situated on the Piket-Bo-Berg approximately 150km outside Cape Town, Retreat Guest Farm is just the place for an incredible escape for an off-grid family weekend, with superb hikes, open-water farm dam swims, bass fishing, fynbos walks and endless single track to explore.
