OVERVIEW

The Big Red Barn is an antique hay barn which was salvaged and rebuilt on Sunlawns Estate, a 200 hectare just 15 minutes from Centurion. It is next to a 20-acre Eucalyptus forest, and looks out over an expansive vista of fields, grasslands and the Kaal River. It is the perfect urban escape, with 25km of scenic MTB trails meandering through veld, farmlands, forest and beside the river.

On your bike

Please purchase your tickets inside the barn BEFORE riding the trails. All trails start and finish at the barn.
There are trails for the casual biker looking for an afternoon crank, but your more competitive rider will certainly find his or her technical fix, too.

Trails are clearly marked and graded:

  • Green Circle – casual riders
  • Blue Square – intermediate riders
  • Black Diamond – advanced riders

ROUTE 1: Blast off (27km) – includes the following trails: Green Circle, Blue Square and Diamond routes. The total length of this route including all the Black Diamond options is just under 27km. An average to good mountain biker takes between 90 minutes to 2 hours to complete the entire route. Black Diamond trails are off shoot trails and very technical, consisting of steep drop-offs, jumps, switchbacks, BMX ramps and berms. They all link back onto the blue or green trail so you can always meet up with members of your group who do not want to attempt the Black Diamond. They are a challenge and should only be attempted by experienced mountain bikers. There are chicken runs for those who have a change of heart.

ROUTE 2: Easy Rider (16km) – This is a combination of easy blue and green trails and is around 16km of easy riding. Suitable for beginners who want to push their limits a little.

ROUTE 3: Halleluja Experience (12km) (suitable for trail running) – Fast, free-flowing ride through the shady forest, approximately 12km long.

ROUTE 4: Altogether now (4.2 km) (suitable for trail running) – A gentle meander through the forest close to the Barn. Suitable for children who are learning the ropes but who need adult supervision. Parents can walk, run or cycle with their kids and enjoy the scenery.
