There used to be a super 39km one-way ride all the way down the valley from Grabouw, but land access became an issue. Guided rides along sections of this route may still be arranged, but most riders who crank Kogelberg these days do so along the lower valley MTB Trail.

On your bike

Start off from the reserve office and follow the trail that links up with the jeep-track following the course of the Palmiet River up the valley. There is a fair bit of up-and-down as you pedal to where you cross the Louws River (6km), continuing to follow the Palmiet to your right. Your turn-around point is at the Stokoei Bridge, with a lovely swimming pool for a quick dip.

Off the bike

In the Kogelberg, visitor numbers are limited and low-impact recreation which is compatible with the wilderness atmosphere is encouraged. Hikers have several options, and should be prepared for fairly rough terrain and unpredictable weather. White water kayaking is allowed each year during the winters season on the Palmiet River, but only for competent kayakers, as the river can be dangerous.

In the less sensitive areas, permitted recreation activities include hiking and mountain biking. Picnic facilities and camping are not provided. Accommodation is limited to five fully furnished self-catering eco-cabins
