The picturesque Gubu Dam is surrounded by forest and is locates at the foot of the magnificent Mount Kubusie.
On your bike
This mountain biking route is a circular route that takes you up the one side of Mount Thomas, and then follows a contour path for a few kilometers through some of the most un-touched indigenous forest you will ever ride. After the contour path you plummet down an awesome gravel road to the Kubusie sawmill. From there, cruise around the back of the dam. You will hit the main gravel road that will take you back home. Most of the riding is spent under trees, so sunscreen is not necessary. The route has no single track.
Off the bike
Gubu Dam has lovely picnic and camping facilities – complete with braai area and ablutions. The dam has been well-stocked with both brown and rainbow trout, so obtain your permit from the Fly-fishing Club and get catching! Should you prefer more adrenalin-pumping sports, you will not be disappointed. Choose between abseiling from a 7m platform, or – for the really brave – from a 100m cliff. Rock climbing, bouldering, archery, canoeing are just some of the activities on offer.
