Overview

A 62km return route starting off from Algeria Forest Station along reasonably good gravel before cranking into a steep climb after 5km along the Cederberg Pass. Replenish water before taking on the return ride.

On your bike

Kick off from Algeria along reasonably good gravel before cranking into a steep climb after 5 km along the Cederberg Pass. Cross a multitude of cattle grids along the next 25 km of undulating gravel and turn right where the road forks. A steep and winding downhill bangs you down into the Kromrivier resort – a perfect place to relax and replenish water before taking on the return ride. This rugged route traverses a fantasy world where dramatic rock formations with names like Wolfsberg, Wegwaai and Hartseer loom within the weathered sandstone panorama.

Off your bike

The town of Clanwilliam is well known for it’s rooibos tea plantations and the lush citrus orchards lining the Olifants River Valley. Clanwilliam Dam, a spectacular body of inland water, offers superb bass fishing, good waterskiing and sailing. Head into the great outdoors on any number of hikes, scramble up the imposing Sneeuberg Peak. Saddle up for a horse trail, test your rock-climbing skills or venture off-road along challenging 4×4 routes. Award-winning wineries line the Olifants River, with tasting offered at various cellars along this remote wine route. Clanwilliam offers a range of leisure activities to visitors, including an annual wild flower show, interesting period architecture, a veldskoen factory and a handful of restaurants serving delectable country cuisine.
