Ride Overview:
The Amariders have been working hard at clearing a network of Single track on the Makhanda Commonage, commonly known as “The Frontier Country”. It is an awesome network of valleys and hills with amazing views from the mountains of Hogsback to the ocean of the Sunshine Coast and all around Makhanda. We even have some amazing Historic sites from the Battle of Grahamstown in 1819 to South Africa’s oldest Post Box as well as one of the world’s most significant Paleontological sites from 600 million years ago. Our very own Toposcope is also site of some amazing world records and a popular stop during mountain drive route cycles. All these are sites that can easily be tagged onto any routes. The Amariders can also help as guides on various of the routes. If you tag some of our routes together and do 100km you should quite easily get 1000m of elevation during the ride. Hope to see you on the “Frontier Trails” soon.
On the bike
The trails are a network of jeep, cattle and pedestrian tracks that have been woven into the terrain over the years. This has provided a web to knit an abundant series of cycling paths all around the city. Within minutes from the city centre, one can be either cycling up Mountain Drive with scenery resembling that of the Scottish Highlands, or if heading north towards Makana Brick, one can meander through endless paths of typical Karoo terrain. Breathtaking, particularly at sunset or sunrise, the terrain offers an endless network of paths scattered with aloes, ‘doring’ trees, quarries, streams, extraordinary rock formation and best of all, not a soul in sight.
Riding is safe, but remote so make sure you have a backup plan.
Markings: Cairns at present, but marking constantly in progress.
