The Bottelary Hills MTB routes are hidden gems – running over 20 farms in the Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy area just outside Stellenbosch. Funds generated by mountain biking activity are used to preserve the land, and as a result, the unique biodiversity of the area – so you can simultaneously crank and give back! How often do you get that opportunity?
The trails consist of undulating jeep track, rolling hills and some single track, with scenic views in all directions.
There are a number or starting points – mostly from wonderfully scenic wine estates with enticing restaurants for after-ride recovery.
On your bike
The Red route is the central circular route, which is accessed via the Orange, Green and Yellow loops from the various trailheads. Although there are some challenging climbs and off-camber turns on loose surfaces, the trails are varied and appeal to riders of all capabilities. Trails are well signposted and maintained. All the trails are on private land with permission from the landowners, as a result strict rules apply to use of the trails. The hallmark of the trails is the scenic beauty and incredible views of the Winelands, Table Mountain, False Bay and other surrounding areas.
