This adventure begins (and boasts its most unique section!) in an historic, open-air cemetery. Be mindful: the single tracks weave uphill and can be rough, featuring glass, rubble, and cacti. A safer option is the rocky road leading to the hilltop, bypassing this area entirely.
Reaching the crest, a panoramic view unfolds. The golf course stretches to your right, while the prison sits to your left. A gravel road, like a windblown web, separates the two. Here, with open terrain and clear sightlines, choose your direction freely. Eventually, fences or roads will guide you back to town.
Our suggested route follows the corridor past the prison fence. Take the first left and then consistently veer left towards the majestic Swartberg Mountains. You’ll reach a normal farm fence. Turn right, staying close to the wire fence on your left, traversing a scenic hilltop with breathtaking views of Oudtshoorn’s three surrounding mountain ranges.
At the turnaround point, marked by another fence, technical single tracks emerge. These become particularly exciting after rainfall, but caution is always advised due to potential thorns.
The return trip features fences on your right – and within it, there lie even more singletracks that are perfect should you be looking to extend your ride. However, these offer short, exhilarating downhill sections which will demand focus, especially the final stretch above the “Dead Centre.” This is the most thrilling part of the ride, so respect its challenges.
Don’t miss the awe-inspiring Cango Caves. For a different kind of adventure, Meiringspoort offers cliff jumping into rock pools. And of course, you’ll find plenty of bird-brained ostriches all over the place.
