Nearly 120 years ago, President Paul Kruger proclaimed the valley to the south of Pretoria as a game sanctuary, the first of its kind anywhere on the African continent. Its main purpose was to protect large herds of animal then grazing on the outskirts of town from hunters, specifically the shy and timid oribi.
These days, the reserve (now managed by Department of Nature Conservation) is still a safe haven to herds of kudu, wildebeest, giraffe and endangered species such as the sable antelope. And the beauty is that it is right here on the edge of the concrete jungle, with ample routes for you to go and ride.
On your bike
The main 13.5 km single-track and jeep track circuit starts from the picnic area, and is very well signposted. Rocky terrain means technically challenging riding for experienced mountain bikers, with anything from undulating hard-pack to steep and sketchy climbs and descents. One thing we can guarantee is extreme heat during summer.
The mountain bike and horse trail routes are separate from running trails, so you need not fear the wrath of fellow trail users. You might however be surprised by zebras or giraffes blocking your route, as most of the wildlife in the park is so tame they will probably ignore you and your bike.
Accessibility, quality facilities and well maintained routes makes Groenkloof a top spot for outdoor enthusiasts from all over Gauteng. Undulating terrain and an elevated altitude will make for a rewarding day out on the trail network for all levels of riders.
Off the bike
Hiking, birding and picnicking are popular activities at Groenkloof. There is also a 4×4 route.
