OVERVIEW
Spectacular rock formations, dense kloofs, patches of indigenous forest and soaring sandstone krantzes…yup, you had better believe you’re in the Free State, baby! The trails on Koefontein Farm traverse the rambunctious ranges soaring along the edge of the north-eastern Free State, with a range of off-road tracks to choose from.
On your bike
Go big along a gruelling 50km circular route, traversing Langberg Mountain along the way to Vrede and back. The trails here focus on self-guided mountain biking, allowing you to free-range along sloping sandstone rock faces and off-trail sections.
Endless dirt tracks follow the ridge contours, with an extreme section ascending along a 4X4 track reserved for super-fit and experienced riders. (This is the route to the abseiling and rock climbing spot, so keep this in mind if you’re keen on spiking up some extra adrenalin).
Off the bike
Mountain biking is only one of seven adventure options offered at Koefontein, so come energized! Off the bike, you can choose from hiking, abseiling, rock climbing, fly-fishing for trout, spinning for bass, caving and horse riding. The geology of this area resulted in the formation of the Waenhuis Cave, which was big enough to hide many Boer women and children with their wordly goods from British forces engaged in Kitchener’s ‘scorched earth’ policy. Miraculously, this cave hid them for the duration of the Boer War. Those unable to hide were doomed to concentration camps. Have a look around but don’t try to go in too deep. You may never come out.
