This breathtaking 30km return route traverses the Montagu Pass, a historic, gravel pass joining George and the small town of Herold. You can ride this as a one-way or return route.
On your bike
Completed in 1848 by Henry Fancourt-White, the mountain road climbs to an altitude of 780m, affording magnificent views across the Outeniqua foothills. Superb gravel surface and steep ascents take you through plantations, indigenous forest and mountain fynbos.
You can ride this as a one-way or return route. You can head back on tarmac via the Outeniqua Mountain Pass into George. Alternatively, opt for a ‘Rail and Trail’ adventure and put your bike on a restored railway trolley, ‘The Power Van’, for an easy ride to the top before heading downhill.
Off the bike
This is fertile ground for hikers, mountain bikers, climbers and 4X4 enthusiasts.
